Most of us spend 6 or more hours a day sitting at a desk, in a car, or on a couch. Sitting for long hours can add up can cause tons of negative health effects.
The effect we probably notice the most is tight muscles. When we sit for long periods our hip flexors, hamstrings, quads, and chest muscles tighten up because they’re in a shortened position for most of the day.
If you experience low back or knee pain from sitting then this stretch is perfect for you. Watch Dr. Rob demonstrate here:
The Couch Stretch
- From a kneeling or standing position on the floor, place one foot on the couch behind you.
- Once your foot is secure get into a half kneeling position.
- If you can, lean back until your butt touches your back foot. Don’t worry if you can’t get there yet!
- To deepen the stretch tuck your hips under. You’ll be surprised how much more you feel the stretch.
- To make it easier move your knee a little farther from the couch and work your way back.
- Hold for a minute and then switch sides!
This stretch is super easy to incorporate into your daily routine if it involves any time on the couch. It only takes a few minutes and won’t interrupt your favourite show!
