Light plays an important role in our sleep, we all know your room should be dark at night but what if we told you there’s more to it than just a dark bedroom?

Our bodies are programmed to wake up when the sun comes up and sleep when the sun goes down. This becomes a problem in Canada in November, December, and January when the sun goes down at 5 pm and comes up at 7:30 am.

 

Exposing yourself to light first thing in the morning, whether it’s a light therapy lamp or a walk outside, is going to help you feel more refreshed and awake.

 

When your eyes are exposed to sunlight, your brain releases cortisol which makes you feel awake. Cortisol is the opposite of melatonin which helps you feel sleepy. Cortisol is naturally higher in the morning and bright natural light helps kick start cortisol release which keeps your circadian rhythm on track.

 

Getting outside for a walk in the morning also counts as exercise and exercise is our second most recommended tip for getting better sleep. So an early morning walk is doubly helpful for your sleep patterns!

You can also check the sunrise and sunset times in your area and make sure you’re getting exposed to some natural light throughout the day. Make morning sunlight a bright spot in your daily routine, and look forward to better, deeper sleep.
